Some characteristics of the village of Kurumbagaram

Kurumbagaram is located in the province of Tamil Nadu, in the south-eastern point of India. The inhabitants are of ethnos group and language tamil.

The village, who is trained many hamlets, counts 3'000 inhabitants. The majority of the population is of Hindu religion. There are a catholic minority and also some Moslems.

The climate is tropical. In period of monsooms, the temperature can rise up to 40 degrees and the air is very heavy. For this reason, it is advised with Europeans to go there in winter.

However, this wealth of cultures encounters on the one hand difficult weather conditions (monsooms, typhoons devastators), and in addition with an overpopulation of the country (more than one billion listed inhabitants) with all the disadvantages that that implies. By chance, buldings of the orphanage, school and house of the Sisters were not damaged by the Tsunami of December 26, 2004, the village being distant from 2 to 3 km of the sea.

In this context, the fact of going to the school constitutes a favour for many children. By ensuring the service of a meal to the poorest, the school of the Sisters supports the participation of the children in the studies.
